Painted Rug

Today I attempted to do the painted rug that I found on Vintage Revivals blog. I followed her directions to the letter, but with a few changes. I won't bore you with the main directions, you can find them here.

The FIRST big change was that I didn't want to use a $75 Sisal rug. I would have like to, but instead I went with a Berber rug from Walmart for $20. This choice is significant, because Berber has a real tight pile, while Sisal rugs are essentially straw.  I had to use a dark fabric marker to mark my lines in order to see them, and my lines may look straight, but because of the pile of the rug they are pretty wide in some areas.

I attempted to paint this with fabric paint, but it just didn't work. For this rug I really need something that's going to SOAK into the rug. Alas, I put away my fabric paint and pulled out my gallon of latex interior paint. It's semi-gloss. I have no clue if that means anything. (Anybody care to check out the difference?)

I found stencils for the letters at JoAnn's Fabrics. They were NOT easy to use, so I recommend you look into making your own stencils like my painted pillows.

The other change is obvious: I didn't paint the circle around the compass. There simply wasn't enough room, so I improvised and painted small squares around the outside.

I have to say, this was a remarkably easy project that only took me a little over 2 1/2 hours.  That's my kind of project!

I decided since my paint and brushes were already out that I should go ahead and paint another rug!  ANOTHER $20 Walmart rug is going to get a makeover!

I used the same interior latex paint, and a stencil I had on hand that I was intending to use for a quilting project (that I STILL haven't completed!)

This one was much easier to paint. The stencil was easy to use, and the paint soaked right in. I don't know if it was because it was low pile (and not Berber) or if the stencil helped keep the paint concentrated. Either way, I'm liking the way it looks.

Here's a closeup of the stencil work:

Don't forget to leave comments regarding this project, and ESPECIALLY let me know if you try it!
